I used to slather creamy foundation on my face daily. It covered all of the sun spots and dark circles that I walked around with and it made me feel secure. I wouldn’t leave the house without it—even when I went to the gym. It became my security blanket and I honestly didn’t realize it.
I never once thought about what I was putting on my skin, and I for sure never looked into the chemicals that were seeping into my pores. I didn’t care because it made me feel so much better to look in the mirror and see a clean face without brown spots. Plus, I liked that it made it look like I slept 8 hours even though my toddler was waking me up at all hours of the night. I wanted the thickest foundation and the most coverage so I could feel like a supermodel while roaming the aisles of the grocery store.
One night (while watching my indulgence of The Real Housewives) I was multitasking and scrolling Instagram stories. I stumbled upon a blogger who was talking about switching your makeup to “cleaner” products. I was intrigued to say the least and I went down a rabbit hole. There I was at 10:30 pm looking up my makeup I used every morning to find out EVERYTHING I was putting on my skin was pure junk. I had an “Aha!” moment right then and there that I was going to clean up my makeup. How could I be so mindful about the food I put in my mouth but then rub chemicals all over my face? It just didn’t add up.
Days later, I downloaded an app from EWG.org and scoured it to find what was rated a 1 or 2 (AKA clean beauty products!) to add to my makeup bag. I also signed up to be a Beautycounter rep (a clean skincare and makeup company) to not only switch out products for myself but also educate other women to really look into what they were buying.
EWG.org is an American activist group that specializes in research and advocacy in the areas of agricultural subsides, toxic chemicals, drinking water pollutants, and corporate accountability. You can download their app to look up products and view their rating. You can also scan products while you’re shopping at the store.
Since I want to make things easier for you, you can use this list as a quick start guide to your clean beauty journey. Below you’ll find the makeup products I used to use (the not so great ones) as well as the clean products I’ve switched to.
Here are the basics you’ll need to know when getting started:
- When EWG.org rates products, 10 is the highest which is the most toxic and 1 is the least toxic. You’ll want to shop for products with a rating of 1 or 2.
- When a product is “verified” they are putting their name on it and it means that this product meets EWG’s strictest criteria for transparency and health.
